How to set up your Macintosh OS X for dialup connection.

To set up you Macintosh OS X computer for dialup, first open the Apple Menu and find click on the System Preferences option.

In System Preferences, open the Network icon under the Internet & Network title.

It doesn't matter what you might have in the Location bar already. In the Show menu, make sure you have Internal Modem selected.  Then click on the TCP/IP tab and make sure Using PPP is chosen in the Configure menu. Leave the Domain Name Servers and Search Domains boxes empty.  Now click on the PPP tab.

Under the PPP tab, enter First Step Internet as your Service Provider, then put in the phone number provided for your city (do not bother about the Alternate number) and finally enter you First Step username and password.  Keep the Save Password box checked. Now click the PPP Options button at the bottom.

When the PPP Options comes up, remember that all the settings under the Session Options are optional. Under the Advanced settings below, make sure only the first two are checked. These are Send PPP Echo Packets and Use TCP Header Compression. Then click OK.  Now click on the Modem tab under System Preferences.

Looking at your Modem menu, make sure you have the "Apple Internal... " selected as your choice of modem. Leave all your settings as indicated in the picture below. Make sure all three boxes are checked, Enable error Correction and Compression, Wait for Dial Tone before dialing and Show Modem Status in Menu Bar.  Also make sure the radio button next to Dialing should be set on Tone.  The ON/OFF next to Sound (lets you hear the modem dialing) is optional according to your preferences.  Now click the Apply Now button.
